The Great Story of our times

It is preferable to bring about change through slow cultural changes and laws, than a revolution spearheaded by a charismatic person or a revolutionary movement or a catchy story and slogan.

No socio-political-economic story or model has emerged to replace the dominant economic theory of Neoliberalism.

Neoliberalism has been so successful that it has replaced religion and social values. Pursuit of sin has become the purpose of life for most in the Westernized World.

People agree neither capitalism, nor socialism work. Nor is Neoliberalism or Neoconservatism working for 99% of us.

It is not enough to highlight a problem. One must also suggest a solution.

The world is eagerly waiting for a story, a leader, or a movement to free us from the modern-day economic, social and political slavery, and rebuild the economic, social and political structures.

Where is the Great Story, the Great Leader, and the Movement of our times?

We can't afford to wait for the messiah, the Great Leader, the Great Movement, or the next Great Big Idea.

Waiting for a great story or a great leader or a superhero to rise and lead a movement is laziness and not pragmatic. We don't have the luxury of time. When the great leaders appear, they are frequently assassinated as soon as they are recognized to have the power to create a movement and lead the change. Dr. Martin Luther King met this fate.

Great political stories, leaders, and movements are also fragile and rare. When they gather critical mass, they sweep everything in front of them. Movements can also be brutally quashed or ignored or corrupted as with the BLM, Occupy Wall St, and the environmental/conservation movement. Winston Churchill spent years in political wilderness. They might not have ever emerged from obscurity.

It is preferable to bring about change through slow cultural changes and laws, than a revolution spearheaded by a charismatic person or a revolutionary movement or a catchy story and slogan.

The fate of all revolutions is the same. The spirit of the revolution disappears leaving behind the scum of bureaucracy.

The great popular story and movement of our times may or may not arise this year or this decade. However, we can start living our life with the values we want to see in our community and the world. There is no substitute to being informed, and living our life with a vision, elegance, class, wisdom, hard work and humanity.

Almost all the challenges facing people at the local level are global in nature. The solution must be local as well as global. We can all be good informed consumers and run responsible business's while we wait for the messiah to bring us the great socio-political-economic story or model of our times. We can't afford to wait for the perfect solution. We have to act with the limited choices we have.
